Oval Portrait - Parveen Shakir, a renowned poet, was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, Pakistan, and studied in London and New York. She returned to Pakistan in 1962 and taught in various universities, before entering the civil service in 1972. In 1976, she became the first female civil servant in the history of the Pakistan government. She served as the chairperson of the National Commission on the Education and Employment of Women and the member of the National Commission on the Promotion of Social Development.
